What are the many benefits of gifts of stocks and bonds?

Included in the many substantial benefits you can receive by gifting stocks and bonds to the Dallas Arboretum Foundation are:

• Avoiding paying capital gains tax on the sale of appreciated stock;
• Receiving a charitable income tax deduction; and
• Furthering our mission today and for decades to come.

How would I make a gift of stocks and bonds?

Actually, there are several different ways and it all depends on what is easiest for you. You could make your gift by:

By electronic transfer - Please contact us for instructions on how you can transfer stock or bonds from your brokerage or investment account to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Society, Inc. This is an easy to complete process and ensures you gifts are deposited directly into the Foundation's accounts.

By certified mail - If you hold securities in certificate form, you will need to mail two envelopes, separately, to complete your gift. In the first envelope, place the unsigned stock certificate(s). In the other envelope, include a signed stock power for each certificate. You may obtain this power from your broker or bank. Please remember to use certified mail to protect your investment and for tracking purposes.

In person - We would love to accept your gift in person. It would give us an opportunity to thank you directly and describe how much the gift means to our garden. Please contact us to set-up a time that is convenient.

How do we value gifts of stocks and bonds?

There are special rules for valuing a gift of stock. The value of a charitable gift of stock is determined by taking the mean between the high and low stock price on the date of the gift. Mutual fund shares are valued using the closing price for the fund on the date of the gift.
