How to Give

How to Give

Your gift to the garden can be done either directly or through a variety of personalized gift methods that can provide tax benefits to you. It may be possible to combine two or more methods to maximize your gift to the garden while still providing for your family and other loved ones. Click on a gift model below to learn more.

  • Bequest/Legacy Gift
You designate our organization as the beneficiary of your asset by will, trust or beneficiary designation form.

  • An IRA Rollover Gift May Satisfy an IRA Required Minimum Distribution
Congress has enacted a permanent IRA charitable rollover. Individuals aged 70½ or older can donate any amount up to $105,000 annually and this gift may satisfy the required minimum distribution up to the $105,000 limit. This direct contribution can be made one time or each year until you direct otherwise. As a result you can make an IRA rollover gift this year and in future years and potentially avoid income tax on those monies. Your tax advisor or attorney can help you maximize the savings.

Likewise, many donors appreciate the opportunity to gift the garden IRA monies that are legally required minimum annual distributions, also known as RMDs. Often times this helps keep the donor from reaching a higher tax bracket and incurring the increased tax liability. By directly gifting the Dallas Arboretum Foundation, any annual RMDs pass tax free from the IRA to the garden. Again, your tax advisor can explain exactly how this might work to your benefit.

  • Beneficiary Designation Gift
You can designate us as a beneficiary of a retirement, investment, bank account or your life insurance policy. This is a very simple way for you to provide a gift to benefit the Dallas Arboretum and requires a simple designation naming the Dallas Arboretum Foundation on the beneficiary card. It truly couldn't be easier!

  • Charitable Remainder Unitrust Gift
You may wish to transfer your cash or appreciated property to fund a charitable remainder unitrust. The trust sells your property tax free and provides you with income for life or a term of years. The balance of the funds would be gifted to the Dallas Arboretum Foundation.

  • Charitable Lead Trust Gift
You fund a trust that makes gifts to support the Dallas Arboretum for a specified number of years. Your family receives the trust remainder at substantial tax savings. Talk with your attorney or tax advisor for information on this type of gift.
